Why should I know my numbers?

Vitality asks you to get a Vitality Health Check once a year to find out your “numbers”. But, why?

Your numbers are a vital part of understanding the overall state of your health and wellness. And when you understand your current health and wellness state, it gives you the knowledge to act. The most important health and wellness numbers include blood pressure, blood glucose, blood cholesterol, and weight and waist measurements.

These specific numbers or measures are important because they reveal your current health status. Each measure has a healthy range recommended by doctors and clinical experts. Having these measures outside of their respective healthy ranges puts you at risk for developing lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and stroke.

For example, a nurse takes your blood pressure. Next, the blood pressure reading reveals two numbers such as 128/88 – and these numbers are tracked against the healthy range (less than 120/80 is the “healthy range” for most people). You just found out that your blood pressure measure is out-of-range. Simple. Now that you have this knowledge, you can gain a sense of control over your health. Knowing these numbers gives you the power to make a difference in your health and wellness and improve your blood pressure by engaging in healthy habits like eating more fruits and vegetables, eating less salt and exercising regularly.

You’ll not only learn your personal numbers through the Vitality Health Check, but you’ll also earn points when you have this health screening done. And when your numbers are in the healthy range, you may earn even more points. In fact, when starting the programme year at Bronze, you have the potential to achieve Silver status (up to 15,000 points) if all your measures are in-range!

To get your Vitality Health Check, go to a participating partner or your health provider. Completing it requires a measure of your height, weight, waist and blood pressure. Additionally, a blood test is needed for your cholesterol and glucose measures. Learn more in the More activities section on the Vitality app.

It’s time to learn your numbers and take control of your health!
