Here’s How to Bring Meaning to Your Life

Having purpose and meaning in your life is a foundational component of resilience. People with purpose and meaning are grounded in a commitment to making a meaningful contribution to the world, providing them with clear direction even when they face difficulty. Those who bounce back stronger from adversity often do because they hold a sense of purpose. When faced with difficulty, they tend to have a more receptive look at adversity or hardship, and are able to view it as a learning opportunity and an obstacle that can be overcome.

In addition to better mental health, having a clear life purpose is associated with better physical and social wellness. A growing body of research  shows that people who have a strong sense of purpose may live longer, as a sense of purpose may be a protective factor against heart disease. , It has also been found that people with purpose experience less pain and mobility issues in older age. They also tend to be more engaged with their families and the people around them, and have more satisfying relationships.

To find your purpose, ask yourself these two questions: why am I here, and what brings meaning to my life? Some people can answer these questions easily, while others may need to explore further. Also, your purpose in life may evolve over time as you experience changes throughout life.
Pioneer of the global purpose movement, Richard Leider, suggests that you can find your purpose when you add up your gifts, your passions and your values.

To explore your life’s purpose and meaning, start by considering your gifts: What are you good at? What are your strengths and talents? Personal strengths may include traits like kindness, creativity, determination, bravery, leadership, modesty or hope.

Next, what do you love to do? Is there something you’re passionate about? What energizes you?  It may be work, a hobby, or taking care of others.

Finally, consider your values. Values are your beliefs and the standards to which you hold yourself or the morals and principles that guide you. Examples of values may be: ambition, beauty, connection, loyalty, nature, freedom, friendship, growth, health, independence, peace, inspiration, stability, wealth or wisdom.

Combine the concepts of your gifts, passions and values to create your purpose. Your purpose should give you a reason to get up in the morning but it’s also a reason for why and how you contribute to the world, and one that gives you clear direction aligned with your personal values. In other words, you want it to be a positive life purpose and not one that is self-serving or counterproductive. Your life purpose is something that challenges you and impassions you.

We’re here to offer you support in achieving your healthiest life. Defining your life’s purpose and discovering what gives you meaning is one trait that is worth building for your mental health and to help build your resilience in the face of difficulty. Why not get started today?
